Saona Island,
leaving from where you should.

The boats to Saona leave from the Bayahibe pier. Anyone booking from Punta Cana spends two hours on a bus getting here before boarding, and another two going back at the end of the day. Leaving from Bayahibe, those four hours stay on the island instead.

What is worth knowing
01

The natural pool is not a pool

It is a sandbank a kilometre offshore where the sea stays waist-deep. The catamaran stops there before reaching the island, the engine goes quiet and people jump in. There are starfish on the bottom. You look at them and leave them where they are: lifting them out of the water kills them, and the guides keep saying so because it needs saying.

02

Mano Juan, which is an actual village

People live on Saona: about three hundred of them in Mano Juan, a village of brightly painted wooden houses inside Cotubanama National Park. There is a turtle hatchery, a school, and women selling crafts on their own doorsteps. Bring cash in pesos: there is no ATM and no card machine, and whatever you buy you buy straight from the person who made it.

03

Catamaran out, speedboat back

The way out is taken slowly, with music and an open bar, because the catamaran takes as long as it takes and that is half the point. The way back is by speedboat, which cuts the same crossing in half, because at five in the afternoon nobody wants two more hours at sea. If you would rather flip the order, or do the whole thing privately, you can: it is a matter of saying so when booking.

From Bayahibe, no contest, because the pier is here. The tours sold in Punta Cana spend the same day on the island but add roughly four hours of bus travel there and back. If you are staying in Punta Cana it is still worth doing; if you are staying in Bayahibe or Dominicus, booking it here is time handed back to you.
Almost. It depends on sea conditions and on clearance from the Port Authority, which is given in the morning. If the sea is not right on a given day, we tell you early and either reschedule or refund. On rough days we do not go out even when we could: spending the day seasick is not worth it.
Yes. The catamaran is stable, the natural pool is shallow and the beach has no surf. The only thing to bear in mind is that it is a long day with a lot of sun: hat, water and sunscreen. If you are travelling with someone with reduced mobility, tell us beforehand and we arrange the boarding, which is the only point with a step.
Swimsuit already on, a towel, biodegradable sunscreen (the reef appreciates it and the park asks for it), a cap, and cash in pesos for Mano Juan. Bring a case for your camera: between the speedboat and the natural pool, everything ends up wet.
